Hummel made his public debut in 1787 at a Mozart concert in Dresden. He was a triple-threat celebrity, composing, conducting, and continuing to play the piano throughout Europe. He composed this undated “Grand Concerto” for bassoon and strings, the F major Bassoon Concerto “circa 1805”. It remained unpublished and unknown until the manuscript turned up in the British Library. Echoes of Haydn and Mozart are heard throughout concerto: tuneful, charming and structurally conventional.
